BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
Ten years have passed since the last AlertForce adventures. The year is 2012. The world is not as it was.In September 2005, a minor nuclear war erupted on the Korean peninsula. North Korea dropped a single, massive nuclear bomb on Seoul, the capital of South Korea. Approximately 1.3 million people perished (450,000 in the initial blast and the rest within weeks, either in lingering fires or due to massive radiation poisoning).
The blast caused massive environmental damage in the immediate (500 mile) radius, and substantially increased radiation levels worldwide. It also exacerbated global warming, and significant climate changes have been noted in the years since the incident. Hurricane, tornado, and violent electrical storm activity has increased substantially over past experience. Even as far away as in the United States, weather is much more unpredictable and dangerous.
The geopolitical implications were also dire. In retaliation for the blast, the United States launched a full-scale conventional bombardment of North Korea, which lasted for almost three full years. Despite this, when a ground invasion was launched thereafter, the resilient North Korean military was able to resist sufficiently to make the invasion an eventual failure, but not before the American and South Korean militaries sustained massive casualties in a 14-month fiasco. The political reverberations chased an American President from office, and substantially weakened NATO, the United Nations, and international cooperation between the US/British alliance and the rest of the world.
Amid a political backlash the likes of which had yet to be seen, the successor President in the United States withdrew almost all American troops to within U.S. borders, and foreign aid was substantially curtailed from Washington.
A number of smaller hot wars have also taken place -- in Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran, New Palestine, Chad, Ukraine, and Brazil. These conflicts have further eroded international cooperation and strained the U.S./British coalition's resources, as well as world economies.
Geopolitical conflict and unrest have also destabilized the world economy, spurring significant and sustained depression in both the United States and Europe. Standards of living in the third world (including most of Africa and South America) have fallen steeply, and many weaker governments in those regions have all but collapsed without western aid and support. Most of Africa and large swaths of South America are functionally areas of chaos, with mob rule and local warlords in control.
Superheroes still exist, but most are not supported by the public, out of bitterness that the heroes failed to anticipate and prevent world unrest and depression. The world's most famous superhero team, AlertForce, initially continued in operation during this time period, with shifting membership and varying levels of success. However, after 2007, public opinion began shifting wildly against all vigilante/superhero teams. The U.S. government cut all funding for superpowered groups such as the Avengers, and laws were enacted preventing police or other law enforcement officials from cooperating with superpowered vigilantes or groups. Amid this furor, AlertForce withdrew from public operations, and their various headquarters complexes fell silent.
Nevertheless, scientists and genetecists have noted substantial increases in mutations and genetic abnormalities, and some have reported increased incidents of paranormal abilities in the general populace. Further, with enhanced vigilanties out of the public eye, paranormal or super criminal activity has increased.
The world is a relatively harsh place to live at the moment. It needs heroes now more than ever. Will you rise to the occasion?
